More time for the craft: working with AI at Leemberg

Five colleagues from Leemberg’s office and production team explored ways to tackle the tasks that take up their time. First understand the tool, then try it on real work.

Start with the work

Before the session at Leemberg Pijpleidingen & Apparatenbouw in Zwijndrecht, we asked participants what takes up time on an ordinary day. They mentioned handling email, finding files, planning, quotations and calculations, meeting notes and reports.

They also raised concerns: what happens to information you enter? And how do you prevent someone from accepting a convincing answer without checking it? Those questions shaped the first session of AI at work.

Understand what you use

We started with the basics. What can a language model do, where can it go wrong, and how do you spot an answer that is incorrect? We then agreed what information can and cannot go into the team account, and why a person reviews everything before it goes to a customer.

A short quiz on participants’ phones rounded off this part. There was plenty of humour too, which helps when you are learning something new together.

Try it with your own material

Next, each participant created a project and a first reusable instruction for a task from their daily work. Examples included drafting a quotation letter from an enquiry, preparing a report from an export and writing a standard email.

The exercises came straight from the initial questionnaire: organising an inbox, checking a purchase order against a request, preparing a work instruction from a drawing and specification, or bringing paper workplace inspections into Excel. We also demonstrated how a project folder with more than eighty files could be organised.

The skilled worker stays in control

The rule for every exercise was the same: AI proposes; the employee reviews. We deliberately included errors and discrepancies in a cutting list and a purchase order. Finding and checking them was an essential part of the exercise.

Five participants left with a certificate, their own project and a first instruction they can continue to use. The second group follows on 30 September. After that, Leemberg will continue developing shared instructions and a consistent way of working across the company.
